Why are general education classes in college?

isnt that what there is elementary, middle, and high school. Why are ge classes required for say, art history or photography? Im really trying to understand why they are so mandatory. A (crazy) friend of mine says its because politicians make millions off of student loans and mandatory ge classes are a way to collect a couple extra years of money out of every single student that wants a degree. Once he said this I cant get it out of my head because really there is no other logical reason why, not after so many years of general education.

I prefer college general education classes to high school general education classes. For one, I can pick which specific courses I want to take. While I might have to take 2 social science courses, I can choose between philosophy, sociology, psychology, economics, etc.

I do think general education classes are too heavily emphasized, but I like them in theory. Taking classes outside of your major does make you more well rounded, even if just for that semester. I personally find the break from my major a bit refreshing. If one simply wanted job training, that is what vocational school is for.
